Laboratory Introduction


The State Key Laboratory of High Performance Tools (hereinafter referred to as the "Laboratory"), was approved for establishment in 2022 by Zhengzhou Abrasives and Grinding Research Institute Co., Ltd. (formerly the National Key Laboratory of Superhard Materials), Chengdu Tool Research Institute Co., Ltd., Huaqiao University, and Guangdong University of Technology. The laboratory belongs to the manufacturing field, focusing on cutting-edge research. It is a national strategic scientific and technological innovation base for high-performance tools in the field of high-end CNC machine tools in China, with enterprises as the main body of innovation, collaborative development of industry, academia, research, and application, deep integration of cutting and grinding, gathering top industry innovation resources, and possessing a full-chain innovation system.

Adhering to the guideline of "facing the four modernizations", and aiming to build an internationally advanced national key laboratory, the laboratory focuses on the technological challenges faced by processing and manufacturing in national major strategic needs, such as building a strong aerospace industry, overtaking in the semiconductor industry, energy transformation, building a strong transportation industry, high-end CNC machine tools, and original leading technologies. Four research directions have been established: (1) Research on cutting/grinding mechanisms; (2) Research on advanced design and manufacturing technologies for high-performance tools; (3) Research on advanced application technologies for high-performance tools; (4) Research on tool performance evaluation methods and standards. The laboratory conducts in-depth research on the full-chain innovation in the theory, materials, design, manufacturing, and application of high-performance tools, aiming to solve key common technologies and leading technologies in the processing field, break through key technological bottlenecks, build a scientific and technological innovation platform for high-performance tools, cultivate outstanding innovative talents, and build the laboratory into a national strategic scientific and technological force with distinctive characteristics, prominent advantages, international advancement, the ability to meet major national needs, and international influence, providing scientific and technological and talent support for the national implementation of the strategy of a strong manufacturing country.

The laboratory has a research team with a reasonable talent structure, long-term active in the international academic frontier, and full of innovation vitality in the field of high-performance tools. There are currently 229 permanent staff members, including 13 national-level talents, 29 provincial and ministerial-level talents, 1 flexibly introduced foreign academician team, 7 experts with special government allowances, 5 overseas contact talents, and 2 foreign academicians. This includes 11 national-level talents such as National Excellent Young Scholars, National Hundred, Thousand, and Ten Thousand Talents Program, Overseas Excellent Young Scholars, and experts with special government allowances, and 46 researchers with senior professional titles, totaling 191 researchers.

The laboratory has perfect scientific research conditions. It currently has a scientific research area of 42100 square meters and has complete high-speed friction and wear testing machines, high-temperature high-speed dynamic mechanical performance testing systems, precision tool grinders, thinning/cutting grinders for chips, coating preparation and tool testing platforms, laser manufacturing tool equipment, precision and ultra-precision machining tools, laser additive manufacturing equipment and other various testing and inspection instruments and equipment, nearly 1000 sets in total, with a total value of over 300 million yuan.

In the next ten years, the laboratory will build a high-performance tool science and technology innovation platform, gather and cultivate outstanding innovative talents, and strive to build the laboratory into a national key laboratory of high-performance tools with distinctive characteristics, prominent advantages, and international advancement in this field, which can meet the major national needs and have international influence. The dependence on foreign countries for high-end numerical control machine tools, high-performance tools for semiconductor integrated circuits (chips) and key technologies will be reduced by 30%, tool performance will be improved by 20%, service life and reliability will be increased by more than 1 time, the ultra-precision machining accuracy in key fields will be improved to 1nm, more than 20 "stuck neck" high-end tool manufacturing and application technology problems in the field of national advanced manufacturing will be solved, independent innovation capabilities will be greatly improved, 1000 high-end talents will be cultivated for the industry, the overall manufacturing technology of high-performance tools will reach the internationally advanced level, and the processing needs of high-end products and key equipment for major strategic projects in our country will be basically met.
